Punk band name generator

Ten Punk band names per roll, each with its own record: .com, Bandcamp and SoundCloud handles, and a same-name search on Bandcamp itself — exact names only, near-misses are not counted. Discogs cross-checks it. A layer we could not reach is marked not checked, and that name is held back.

Our own lexicon. No name here was lifted from another generator's list.

How Punk band names are built

Punk names are short and horizontal. One or two words, usually a plural noun of people — kids, rats, bastards, choir — with `The` in front, because the band is a gang and the article is the roll call. Adjectives are insults: snot, cheap, dead, rotten, sore.

Nothing in a punk name should need a second read. If it has three words or an "of", it stopped being punk and became hardcore or post-punk. The form is closer to a chant than a title.

Sore Bastards

Insult plus insult. Sore is a physical complaint, bastards is the audience. No article, so it shouts rather than introduces.

The Cheap Rats

Cheap does double duty — cheap sound, cheap ticket. Rats is the oldest punk plural there is, and the article makes it a gang instead of a species.

Loud Choir

A choir is the least punk thing in the room, which is why it works. Loud turns the joke into a threat, and two syllables fit on a stencil.

What the record means

Four checks run against things we can call any day. Metal Archives is a bonus: it is the only site that covers the metal underground end to end, and it also goes down for days.

Bandcamp search also returns near-misses — one word shared, a plural, a misspelling. Those are not counted. Strip the spaces, the punctuation and the case; if the two names are not identical after that, the name is still open. That rule is written into the code, not applied by eye.

Names that are already gone

13 of the Punk names on this page are used by someone. Bandcamp is the first place most independent bands put a page, so a hit there is the strongest signal we can get without waiting on a third-party outage.

Why this exists

A generator that hands you a name nobody uses is worth more than one that hands you a thousand names already taken. Every genre has this problem: the same words get recombined for decades, and a new band finds out too late that four others got there first.

So every name runs through the same four checks before it reaches you, and the whole list is re-run every month. Names that were free last month and are taken now move into the table above. The list is dated, and the date is the point.

No account, no email gate, no “premium names”. Roll as many times as you want.
